Round 1 covers the following topics from the syllabus:

  • Markdown programming in Google Colab
  • Mathematical foundations for AI
  • Basic coding
  • Machine learning
  • Advanced coding for deep learning (PyTorch)
  • Deep learning foundations
  • Basics of convolutional neural networks (CNNs)

Format and schedule

Round 1 consists of two parts on Friday, February 19, 2027. All times below are Eastern Time (ET). Students must start each part within its required start window.

Each part's timer begins when the student starts. The system closes at the stated time for everyone. There are 15 minutes between Part 1's closing time and Part 2's opening time; a student's actual break depends on when they finish Part 1 and begin Part 2.

Part 1: Non-coding and app lockdown

  • All questions are multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank. Access the questions and enter answers within contest.usaaio.org.
  • App lockdown is enabled. Do not leave the contest app, switch to another app or website (such as ChatGPT), or close and reopen the contest app.
  • Leaving the app may trigger a temporary or permanent lock. Only your proctor can unlock a temporary lock. A permanent lock cannot be removed.

Part 2: Coding and monitoring

  • Use contest.usaaio.org to view coding tasks and submit answers or required files. Use Google Colab to write and run code, perform analysis, and generate files.
  • All code must run on CPUs. In Round 1, GPUs are neither required nor allowed.
  • App lockdown is disabled so students can use Google Colab. However, the required installed software continues to jointly monitor student activity.

Required software and computer setup

The following software and single-monitor requirements apply to every round:

  • Contest platform: Confirm that you can sign in to contest.usaaio.org before the competition.
  • Lateran AI: Install and enable Lateran AI before the competition begins. Keep it running until the competition ends; do not turn it off early.
  • OBS Studio: Install OBS Studio and record both your entire screen and your face throughout the competition. Capture the complete display, not just an application, window, or cropped area, and include your camera feed. Make a test recording beforehand and play it back to confirm that both the full screen and your face are visible.
  • One monitor only: Every student must use a single monitor. Simultaneous use of multiple monitors is strictly prohibited.
  • Google account and Colab: Sign in to your Google account, open Google Colab, and complete any required two-factor authentication before the competition starts. Cell phones may not be used during the competition.

Restroom and departure policy

  • No restroom breaks are permitted during either part. Leaving during a part ends your exam for that part.
  • You may not leave before 12:30 p.m. during Part 1 or before 2:00 p.m. during Part 2.

What to bring

  • Your computer, set up to meet the software, recording, and single-monitor requirements above.
  • Pens or pencils.
  • Do not bring a cell phone, smartwatch, smart glasses, earbuds, or other electronic devices apart from your required computer.
  • Do not bring rulers, compasses, or your own paper, whether blank or written on. Your proctor will provide blank paper for scratch work.

After the exam: Submit supplementary documents

Deadline: Before 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, February 20, 2027 (the day after the exam).

  1. Sign in to contest.usaaio.org.
  2. Find the 2027 USAAIO Round 1 supplementary documents exam.
  3. Submit URLs for all required documents, including the URL or URLs for your OBS recording. Recordings may be hosted on YouTube, Google Drive, or Vimeo. Ensure the submitted links are accessible to the competition reviewers.

USAAIO Camp

How to participate in the USAAIO camp

  • Qualify through Round 2.
  • Eligible participants include U.S. citizens and permanent residents, as well as international students attending schools in the U.S.

Team USA

How Team USA is selected

  • Team USA is selected at the USAAIO camp.
  • Only U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents (green card holders), and international students attending secondary schools in the U.S. are eligible (in accordance with IOAI rules).

Competitions in which Team USA will participate

Disqualification (Zero tolerance for cheating)

  • One cheating incident, permanent ban: A student found to have cheated is permanently disqualified from the current competition cycle and all future competition cycles.
  • If a disqualified student applies to an organization's educational program (such as a college, summer program, or scholarship opportunity) and the program requests information about the student's history with USAAIO, we will truthfully disclose the cheating behavior and the disqualification decision.
  • All decisions are final.
